The Fortune Global 500 list, also known as the Global 500, is an annual ranking of the top 500 companies in the world based on their revenues. The list is compiled and published annually by Fortune magazine. Until 1989, the list included only non-American industrial companies with the International 500 title, while the Fortune 500 list contained and continues to include exclusively American companies. In 1990, American companies were added to compile a truly global list of the top industrial companies ranked by sales.
Since 1995, the list has taken its current form, and also includes major financial corporations and service providers by revenue.
